Traffic Enforcement

Williamburg's Conservation Plan highlighted the need for increased police surveillance to ensure that motorists observed existing speed limits and stop signs. Four of the 24 traffic-related recommendations focused on this measure:

12. Install additional speed limit signs and increase police surveillance, especially along Little Falls Road, Williamsburg Boulevard, Sycamore Street, Lexington Street and Powhatan Street.

13. Increase police surveillance and enforcement of speed limits on 36th and Somerset Streets from Powhatan to Williamsburg Boulevard when students are driving to and from Bishop O'Connell High School.
19. Increase police surveillance and enforcement of the 25 mph speed limit when children are going to and from school.

22. Increase police surveillance and enforcement of full stops at stop signs and yield signs at the [Williamburg] traffic circle.

Individual citizens can also call to request additional police surveillance of problem streets. if you are alarmed at the dangers posed by commuters using our neighborhood as a speedway, you can highlight citizen concern by calling Arlington County Police at 703-228-4141 to report the problem. Be ready to identify the scope of the problem (i.e., is it a rush-hour problem or an all-day problem?) and ask for a follow-on letter from the Police Department, summarizing their findings. The County will also deploy a Speed Display Trailer, which allegedly inhibits speeding by alerting drivers of how fast they are going.

Normally, increased police surveillance will have an inhibiting effect on speeders only for a short time. But at least pedestrians will be somewhat safer for a few days. In addition, this is one of the ways that County residents can signal their distress over commuters speeding through our residential neighborhoods.
