Traffic Calming on Arterial Streets

MEASURES TO ALTER AN ARTERIAL STREET
Draft Tool Box


Continuously

  • Reduce number of travel lanes
  • Reduce width of travel lanes
  • Introduce on-street parking
  • Add edge treatments
  • Plant street trees
  • Introduce bike lanes
  • Construct medians for pedestrian refuge
  • Regrade streets to allow valley gutters with catch basins between parking and travel lanes
  • Change pavement texture and color
  • Widen sidewalks and planting strips
  • Decrease posted speed limits in combination with geometric street changes
  • Create chicane with alternating sides of parking
  • Speed control with traffic signal progression


Periodically

  • Add tree nubs
  • Construct raised intersections
  • Add pedestrian refuge islands
  • Color pavement in bike / auto conflict areas
  • Worm islands to replace two-way turn lanes
  • Add bus stop nubs, with ample intersection clearance
  • Add ladder style crosswalks
  • Construct roundabouts instead of multilane intersections
  • Add "rest on redsignal control
  • Add speed activated signal control
