Small Parks Grants

Letter Inviting Citizens to Participate in the FY 2003 Small Parks Program

4/2/02

Dear Concerned Citizen:

The Arlington County Park and Recreation Commission would like to make you aware of the opportunity to participate in the Fiscal Year 2003 Small Parks Program. Through the Small Parks Program, the County awards grants to citizens and community groups to implement small capital improvements and beautification projects for County parks, recreation facilities and open space in their neighborhoods. Since the program began in 1978, more than 150 projects have been funded. These include projects such as tot lots, park furniture, drinking fountains, landscaping, fencing and sports and building amenities. The maximum Small Parks grant is $10,000.

The first step in applying for a Small Parks Grant is to submit a letter of intent. The deadline for submitting a postmarked letter of intent for this year's program is by 4:30 on May 15, 2002. The letter should include a general outline of the project and the name, address and telephone number of the contact person. Once the letter of intent is received, a member of the Park and Recreation Commission will be assigned to advise the applicant in the preparation of the final application.

The deadline for final applications is September 30, 2002. By this application deadline, all proposals must have a concrete, realistic budget in order to be favorably considered. The Commission will hold a public meeting in October to receive comments on the applications and will determine the viability of the proposals and the level of funding.

A copy of the Small Parks Program Guidelines is attached for your information. Please call Erik Beach, Staff Coordinator, at (703)228-3318 with any questions. We look forward to the opportunity to work with your organization.
