Residential Zoning

WCA 7 February 2003 Letter to BZA

7 February 2003

Mr. Scott McGeary
Chairman, Board of Zoning Appeals

Dear Mr. McGeary:

On behalf of the Williamsburg Civic Association, I am writing with regard to the structure on 6430 27th Street North. At our membership meeting on 28 January, our members asked me to write you urging the Board of Zoning Appeals to fully enforce its November 14, 2001 decision. We ask you to refuse to grant any further time extensions to the owner of the property.

It is now February 7, 2003 - over two months past the 29 November 2002 deadline for complying with the conditions specified in the 29 May settlement. However, large amounts of construction debris remain in front of this large structure. The owner has clearly failed to comply with the terms of the May settlement and must now bring his structure into compliance with the BZA's November 2001 decision. We urge you to reject his appeal.

The county's original decision to grant a variance to the property owner in 1999 was a major mistake. The structure is jarringly incompatible with everything around it and should never have been allowed to be built. The perpetuation of the county's mistake, through delays and other forms of temporizing, continues to demoralize nearby property owners and to offend the entire neighborhood. Upon seeing structure, even visitors passing through the neighborhood have commented, "How did that get approved?"

So again, the Williamsburg Civic Association urges the Board of Zoning Appeals to deny any additional requests for extending the time allowed for the property owner to come into compliance with the 14 November 2001 decision.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,

Ellen Jones
