Zoning Administrator's Response to 27 June WCA Letter

Thursday, June 28, 2001 1:55 PM

The subject variance was approved by the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) on February 10, 1999. The Secretary of the Board of Zoning Appeals at that time, Deputy Zoning Administrator Marjorie Lex, was charged with making all recommendations to the Board of Zoning Appeals on behalf of Zoning Administration. Ms. Lex is no longer a member of the Arlington County staff. This is the job presently held by Deputy Zoning Administrator Tony Burnette. The report to the Board of Zoning Appeals prepared by Ms. Lex states her recommendation and the reasons behind it. I was not Zoning Administrator in 1999, therefore I have no information regarding her reasons for recommending approval of the variance other than those stated in the report. Mr. Burnette has prepared a package of information that you requested which will be mailed to you in the next day or two. This package includes Ms. Lex's report. Since Mr. Burnette is the Executive Secretary of the Board of Zoning Appeals now and is in charge of making recommendations to the Board regarding variance requests I am asking him to discuss with you whether it would be worthwhile for him to attend either of your association meetings. Mr. Burnette will not have any more information on Ms. Lex's recommendation than I do since he was not a member of the Zoning Administration staff in 1999. Mr. Burnette does have knowledge of the responsibilities of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the variances that are typically requested and those that are typically approved by the BZA. Tony will be back in the office on Monday, July 2.
