Nottingham School Project

Nottingham Elementary School is planning a renovation and construction
project that is now in the planning stages. The project will be guided by
Building Level Planning Committee (BLPC) formed by the Arlington School
Board and composed of Arlington Public School staff, PTA representatives,
and two representatives from the Williamsburg Civic Association.

The architect for the project has been approved by the Arlington County
School Board and is working with the Building Level Planning Committee
developed and approved a schematic design for the project. It was approved
by the school board.

The next step is for the architect to complete 35% of the design
development. When this is available we will post to the website. The date
for the presentation to the School Board of the prioritization rankings and
bond projects w
as scheduled for May 2.

The general plan envisioned for Nottingham includes:

  • Replacing old mechanical systems, such as HVAC
  • Bringing the building into compliance with the Americans with
    Disabilities Act
  • Creating new media center/library
  • Creating a more attractive and secure entrance to the school
    building
  • Adding four to six classrooms to the building in order to
    accommodate increased enrollment.

These measures are greatly needed and have the potential to benefit both the
school and the community. The new classroom space will get the children out
of the trailers, now parked in the rear of the school. The overall project
will improve the school facility, making our neighborhood more attractive to
families with young children - an important factor determining property
values.

We will provide updates on the Nottingham project on this web site and in
the WCA Newsletter as we get information.

Construction will begin after November 2002, when the bond for the project
is approved. For more information on the options the Planning Committee
considered and the compromise they decided on, see the following BLPC
