About WCA

Williamsburg Civic Association
Goals May 2003-May 2004

Make Williamsburg a more pedestrian-friendly community.

  • Monitor County implementation of Powhatan Street Neighborhood Traffic Calming Project.
  • Work with citizens and County Staff on the Little Falls Neighborhood Traffic Calming project (from Harrison to Lexington).
  • Assist/support/advise community residents on all other existing and future requests to Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee.
  • Work closely with County during implementation of Little Falls 1 and 2 pedestrian safety/median projects. Keep near neighbors informed through working group meetings.
  • Work closely with County during implementation of Williamsburg Boulevard pedestrian safety/median projects. Keep near neighbors informed through working group meetings.
  • Work with County staff and residents to submit Sycamore Street Median/Beautification project to NCAC.
  • Explore the possibility of submitting pedestrian safety/median project to NCAC for remaining portions of Williamsburg Boulevard (from the Circle to North Kensington St.).
  • Work with County Task Force developing an Arterial Transportation Management program (for traffic calming on arterial streets like Sycmoare and WIilliamsburg).
  • Lobby County to increase funding for Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program.
  • Support traffic calming in neighboring civic associations by partnering with them on joint projects and encouraging them to request traffic calming for adjacent streets (such as Yorktown Boulevard) where traffic speeds impact on our neighborhood.

Improve neighborhood parkland, expand open spaces, and improve the tree canopy.

  • Minor Hill/Sharp Park:
    • Work with County staff to implement Area A improvements (near pumphouse).
    • Submit Minor Hill 2 NC project and work with County Staff toward implementation.
  • Continue support for tree canopy expansion through the fall tree planting program and median projects on Little Falls, Williamsburg, and Sycamore (see above).

Improve communication with the neighborhood, community, and County.

  • Continue to hold monthly meetings and ad hoc committee meetings to keep the neighborhood informed and solicit suggestions and approval for community projects.
  • Continue to publish monthly newsletters, supported primarily by advertisement and distributed by a combination of the US mail and volunteer door-to-door distributors.
  • Publish ad hoc e-newsletters and action alerts to WCA distribution list.
  • Expand WCA distribution list.
  • Reorganize and expand the Willliamsburg web site to reflect all Neighborhood Conservation projects, traffic calming activities, and zoning/infill material.

Increase community involvement in neighborhood projects and enhance a sense of community.

  • Hold a Neighborhood Day Pancake Breakfast.
  • Continue the pre-meeting coffee half-hour.
  • Continue to maintain active WCA representation at the Arlington Civic Federation and the Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee.
  • Organize a fall community clean up day.
  • Seek more publicity for the Civic Association through local newspapers.
  • Continue to provide organizational support to citizen requests on such matters as zoning problems, noise ordinance violations, and other zoning ordinance problems.
