About WCA

Williamsburg Civic Association
Accomplishments for May 2001 - May 2002

1. Membership Meetings: We held eleven membership meetings (every month except December). Each meeting began with a half hour of refreshments, featured a program with one or two speakers, and included a business meeting.

2. Communication:

  • Nine newsletters: We moved from a four page newsletter every other month to a monthly newsletter. Every other month we do an eight-page newsletter which is mailed through the US Postal Service. In the in-between months, we do a four-page newsletter which is distributed door to door. Newsletters are funded through advertisement.
  • Six hand-distributed action alerts and meeting announcements, in issues such as zoning developments and Neigbhorhood Conservation projects.
  • Information Kiosk: At WCA request, the County's Parks Department installed an Information Kiosk in Sharp Park for meeting announcements and other community information.
  • Web Site: We redesigned the web site in July 2001 and expanded it significantly to cover meeting minutes, copies of the newsletter, detailed information on Neighborhood Conservation and traffic calming projects, and updates on community developments (such as the Nottingham School construction project).

3. Neighborhood Conservation Projects:

  • Neighborhood Signs: WCA approved a final design for the signs, which were installed last fall and landscaped this spring.
  • Little Falls 1 & 2: NCAC and the County Board have approved both parts of the Little Falls Road median project, which is now in design phase.
  • Minor Hill Use Plan: NCAC approved the Use Plan at the June 2001 funding session. The Use Plan is now nearing completion and will be submitted to the membership for discussion this summer.
  • Williamsburg Boulevard Project: WCA members approved this project as our priority project for the June 2002 funding session.

4. Traffic Calming/Pedestrian Safety:

  • WCA approved the Powhatan Street Traffic Calming project in the fall 2001.
  • WCA made a presentation to the Arlington County Traffic Commission in December requesting that the County provide funding for traffic calming on arterial streets.

5. Williamsburg Circle Project:

  • WCA endorsed a project by local Boy Scout Joe Donahoe to raise funds and install a new flagpole on Williamsburg Circle.
  • WCA requested that the County put new landscaping in the Circle and approved the Parks Department landscape plan.

6. Sharp Park/Minor Hill Maintenance: WCA drew up a specific list of requests (documented in photos) and met with Parks and Water officials in a walking meeting to go over our requests. Parks Department has implemented most of our requests, including replacement of rotting timber walkways, cleanup in Sharp Park, and installation of a new park bench by the metro stop.

7. Bylaws: We revised the WCA bylaws, which had been last amended in 1976.

8. Membership: WCA active membership (dues-paying members) increased from 110 to 260.

9. Liaison to Nottingham School Project: WCA appointed a representative to attend building level planning committee meetings, with information reported at WCA meetings, in the newsletter, and on the web site.

10. Arlington Civic Federation: WCA delegates attended all Civic Federation meetings and provided feedback to Williamsburg residents through the newsletter, WCA meetings, and web site.

11. Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee: WCA representatives attended all NCAC meetings and provided feedback to Williamsburg residents through the newsletter, WCA meetings, and web site.
